TOS review: Kregel books

Circle,C,Kregel,Susan,Marlow

From Kregel publishing, we received Andi's Scary School Days to read and review.   This book is from a series of books called Circle C Beginnings that are aimed at children ages 6-8.  They are short chapter books ideal for the child just beginning to read chapter books.

Andi is a sweet six year old living in 1847 on ranch.  It's time for her to begin school-something she is not wanting to do.  The book follows her first few days of school and the trouble she gets into-not necessarily intentionally.

I must state that my children are 9 and 11-over the age recommendation.  This is important because they had a different opinion than I did about the books and I believe my opinion to be the superior one. :-)  I found Andi's Scary School Days to be a delightful book.  My children thought it was simply ok.  I however believe it is simply due to their age.  I do think they both would have enjoyed the book when they were in first grade and just beginning to read chapter books.

Something else I love about this book is the website for the Circle C Beginnings books.  There are free activity packs, including coloring pages, for you to download to use with your child to supplement the book.  I can totally see myself using this book and the activity pages with my littlest when she starts reading (yes, that is years down the road since my littlest isn't even born yet, but still, I see it happening).  In addition, you can purchase lapbooks to go along with the books.

Although I do recommend these books for early readers, I feel I must mention that some of the writing structure bothers me.  There were fragments of sentences written as sentences and sentences beginning with and or but.  These were done more for emphasis, but I still would prefer to see proper grammar.  (I realize that my own blog contains a lot of grammar errors and I do these things as well, but my blog isn't published for young kids to read.)

Books 1-4 in the series can be purchased together for $15.96 or separately for $4.99 each.  You can also go to their lapbook page and purchase the book and lapbook together as a set.  Go here for ordering the books only and here for ordering them with the lapbooks.

Go here to see what my fellow crewmates had to say about the various Circle C Beginnings books.

(I received a free copy of Andi's Scary School Days in exchange for my honest opinion.  No other compensation was received.)

Thanks for your SUPERIOR opinion, over that of your kiddos. :-)
"Delightful" works for me as a review remark. LOL
Glad you liked the book. Yes, it does go against the grain of a professional author to go with the clipped sentences. But it does make the book move along and be "snappy." LOL
(The older series--middle-grade novels about Andi--are written in the "normal" style of regular literature).

Thanks again for your review!
